Harvest Time down on the farm

Harvest time is our busiest time of the year, when all the other 11 months of hard work and effort come to fruition. Men and machines work very long hours during this period, including late into the night and weekends to gather in the crops.
The British summer can be "fickle" and having the weather often right up behind you makes the job even more stressful.
Harvesting the crops must occur at just the right time and something that comes with experience, again the weather plays a crucial part in a successful harvest in having to be done only during good weather.
During Combine harvesting, the crop is transported from the field in grain trailers to our central grain store, where it is stacked and stored till it is sold into the grain markets, either for food production in the home market or for export. When the grain is in the grainstore it must be "conditioned" by passing cool air through it and extracting moisture which will otherwise build up in stockpiled grain. Fan's and dryers ofter run 24hrs a day, 7 days a week for months on end to keep the grain in good condition for it's end user.
Once sold, the grain is loaded away onto specialist grain trucks where it is transported to Mills throughout the UK or to Ports for export.
The by product of combine harvesting is the straw element, which is either chopped out the back of the combine to add fertility to the soil, or is baled for livestock bedding or feed.
